1. Test Takers with Japanese Citizenship
- Passport
- Japanese Driver’s License and *Confirmation of Identity
Letter
- All of the above must be valid
- Original copy only
- Driver’s License, Student ID or Confirmation of Identity Letter alone
cannot be accepted
- Only the Student ID cards issued from the school you
study at are acceptable(The school should be elementary
school, middle school, high school, college and university
stipulated by the first article of School Education Law).
Vocational schools and other professional schools are
not included
- Employee ID card is not acceptable.

You should refer to the Information Bulletin and have
it issued from the school you study at or graduated
from. The one issued from your employer cannot be accepted.
The one written in Japanese is not acceptable (No hand-written
is acceptable). You cannot test with an incomplete letter.
*Only the letters issued from
the school you study at or graduated from are acceptable
(The school should be elementary school, middle school,
high school, college and university stipulated by the
first article of School Education Law). Vocational schools
and other professional schools are not included. For

(In case of no letter head, you may type
the name of the school)
[2] Your name
(Remember, the name you use when you schedule
an appointment or fill out a registration
form is the name that must appear on your
confirmation-of-identity letter. The name must be written in Latin alphabets.)
[3] Your date of birth
[4] Name of the school
[5] Date the letter was issued
[6] Your photograph, glued to the letter
[7] The seal of your school, overlapping
your photograph
[8] The signature and title of the official
who issued the letter, overlapping your
photograph
[9] Your signature
(A Confirmation of Identity Letter is valid
for only one year.)

2. Test Takers without Japanese Citizenship
- Passport
- Military ID Card (US)
- An Alien Registration Card (bearing your signature and name in English letters) will be accepted only with a secondary ID document with photograph and signature. You must present an acceptable secondary identification in addition to your alien registration card to be admitted.
- It must be valid. - It must bear your photo and signature.
- Acceptable Secondary Documents with photograph and
signature are: government issued ID that has not expired
including but not limited to passport, driver's license,
state ID, national ID, or military ID, or a confirmation
of identity letter issued from your educational
institution.
Unacceptable Secondary Documents are: any expired ID, credit cards of any kind, Social Security card, international driver's license, international
student ID, notary-prepared letter or document, employee ID card, learner's
permit or any temporary ID document. To review the ID requirements or to view the sample letter, please go to GRE website: www.gre.org.
NOTE: If your passport does not contain your signature or is not written in Latin alphabets (English letters), you must also present another document.
